Helping expand the minds of our students
March brought with it exciting learning events for our community and opportunities to grow and expand student imagination. We were particularly impressed by Bookweek which promoted student learning through reading, and extended that experience into our daily and creative life. The Spelling Bee which provides exciting motivation to learn more English vocabulary - also was a highlight because expanding our vocabulary is the first step to greater language understanding. Our Monthly STEM Open Day built on our desire to link our students’ interests to the local environment, including the mangrove and sea grass areas, and also to empower them to improve their creative problem solving skills - so that they can learn to both analyze and improve. We also hosted many young families who were considering joining our community.
Throughout the month, students in the lower school engaged in expeditionary learning adventures- where they integrated learning inside the classroom with activities outside. For those looking further afield, our upper school diplomats went to Jeju, Korea to help solve international problems collaboratively with students from around Asia at a Model UN. Now they are so inspired, they hope to organize an international event of their own. Our historians brought new insight into how the past has shaped our present, through the regional competition for the National History Day. Our athletes also rose to new levels. From a “hole in one” on the course to fabulous layups on the court; SSM-FC students are maturing through our sports program, becoming fit for life, and gaining valued skills like team leadership.
As we move into April and the fourth quarter of the year, we want to spend some more time talking to families about planning for the coming year. These family meetings are important to us because our school is built and rebuilt each year according to the needs of our students and the wishes of their families. We are particularly reaching to all 10th and 11th grade students to review their plans for school and holiday time and see how they align with their vision for their future. We are hiring great teachers to help us learn next year, allowing us to begin building some new programs as well; like ones for our aspiring: scientists and engineers, fine and performing artists, and entrepreneurs. Family choices, discussions about personal goals with student’s, and our final hiring; are all linked together. Any family who is interested in discussing their child’s interests and plans for their future can make an appointment by writing to Pearly – pearly.tan@ssm-fc.org.
Several of us have been recruiting prospective families in new areas locally and throughout Asia; if you can help us expand our school in your neighborhood or home country, please let us know. Finally, we hope to see you all soon for the April 20th Arts Day and April 30th for Parent Teachers Conferences..

Empowering Students: K5 Fundraiser Success and Skills Development
We're delighted to share the fantastic news that our K5 fundraiser with scented candle sale exceeded all expectations, thanks to your generous support. Together, we've raised 3010 RM, providing enough funds to feed 300 dogs and 700 cats for approximately a day. Ms. Betty from Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Shelter came to collect the K5 donations.
Through actively participating in the candle-making and sales process, our students have not only contributed to a worthy cause but also acquired invaluable life skills. They've delved into concepts of financial literacy and mathematics, exploring topics such as capacity, volume, and temperature. Moreover, this experience has empowered them to uncover their entrepreneurial spirit and hone their public speaking abilities, all while promoting awareness about animal care and compassion.
Puto Village Field Trip
Grades 1 and 2 enjoyed a day filled with exploration, cultural immersion, and lots of fun on their recent field trip to Puto Village and Buddhist Temple.
Puto Village is a Malaysian heritage village where students had the opportunity to learn about traditional Malaysian Culture. They were fascinated to see the traditional bamboo structures and vibrant cultural displays. Students had a blast exploring the enchanting bamboo forest surrounding the village. They frolicked amidst the towering bamboo trees, capturing countless memories with their friends and teachers. The lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for our little adventurers to immerse themselves in nature.
One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Buddhist Temple nestled within the serene surroundings of the village. Students were in awe of the intricate architecture and peaceful ambience of the temple. They had a chance to observe Buddhist rituals and learn about the teachings of Buddhism, fostering an appreciation for the different cultures and religions.
But the excitement didn’t end there! Our young explorers were treated to a delightful surprise - bamboo ice-cream! They couldn’t contain their excitement as they indulged in this unique and delicious treat, made inside a fresh bamboo shoot. This was a delightful sensory experience they will surely remember.
We are incredibly proud of the students' curiosity, enthusiasm, and respectful behaviour throughout the field trip. We look forward to many more adventures ahead.
Spelling Bee
Led by Ms. Conley, on Wednesday, 27 March, finalists from grades 1-7 competed in our school’s first annual spelling bee. We are so proud of the level of hard work and enthusiasm that each student put into their study, and we are excited to announce the winners for each division’s competition.
In grades 1-3, we had a total of 14 class finalists who battled for the title. In the end, Yi Tong Chi was named the winner. In grades 4-7, 20 finalists vied for the title of first ever spelling bee champion. In the grades 4-5 division, Zifeier (Bonita) Wang walked away with the winning medal, while Isaac Yong was declared champion for the grades 6-7 division.
Several students have already expressed an interest in next year’s competition, so be on the lookout for fresh, new spelling lists at the beginning of September. We will formally participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, where our students will have the chance to learn many more words and to represent our school in regional competitions and beyond. Who knows? Perhaps next year’s winner will come from our school!
Grade 5 Science Explorations
Grade 5 Students are learning about how the sun helps us explore other planets. Students gather evidence to support an argument that the apparent brightness of the Sun is dependent upon an observer's distance from the Sun. Students construct a model solar system and gather observations of the Sun's apparent brightness from each planet.
Grade 5 students continue to explore gravity on earth and different planets in our solar system. They built models to show how gravity pulls everything towards the centers of the planets and earth, regardless of the orientation of the objects. They came to the understanding that gravity can be overcome by other forces greater than the force of gravity. 'Defying gravity' allows an object as heavy as a metal ball to float in the air.
ELT Junk Sale
The Elementary Leadership Team (ELT) students will be hosting the Third Annual Junk Sale on Tue 14 May and Wed 15 May 2024 in room D0302. This is a much anticipated community event with people donating their used items for sale as well as everyone visiting the Junk Sale to pick up new things. The Junk Sale is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to clear up their cupboards before the summer break. As any new purchases are previously used, this lessens the impact on the environment.
Donations are being collected from now until Mon 6 May. Please bring any gently used books, toys, clothes, shoes, stationary, art supplies, household items, sports equipment, and used uniforms for donation to room C0306.
The schedule for students, staff, parents and other community members for when to visit the Junk Sale will be shared soon.
Model United Nations Conference Trip to Korea
From February 28 to March 3, SSMFC students showcased their diplomatic skills at the Korea International School Jeju's MUN Conference. Held on the picturesque Jeju Island, the event was a testament to academic excellence and holistic development. Our dedicated MUN student organization have been preparing since September, honing their debating and resolution-writing abilities. Impressively, three of our youngest upper school members, and first-time MUN participants in grade 7—Isaac Cheng, Jiwon Yoon, and Dong Hyun Lim—joined seasoned participants from grades 8 to 11- G8 Dain Lee, G10 Jiho Yoon, G10 Javier Dominguez, and G11 Minjoo Kim. Our attendees, guided by Mr. Tanner and Dr. Korth, displayed remarkable growth and resilience, further enhancing their global engagement and communication skills.
SSM-FC College Fair 2024
The College Fair on February 28 was a hub of information and inspiration for our upper school students and their families. Held in our Performing Arts Center from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, the event featured university representatives and informative workshops on diverse educational pathways. Highlights included presentations on pathways our families might not have considered including presentations on Finnish higher education, studying business at the ESSEC in Singapore, and alternative guarenteed pathways to the University of California. The fair was meticulously organized by Ms. Maria Marinescu and Danny Ho from Fortrust Education, offering invaluable guidance for future academic endeavors.
Participating universities spanned a wide range, from the Australian National University to the University of Technology Sydney, and from international locations like the Ecole Ducasse in France to Navitas institutions covering multiple countries. This event was particularly notable for the personalized advice provided by academic professionals, helping students and parents make informed decisions about their educational futures.
SSM-FC Wins in National History Day Regionals
This year, our dedicated students from grades 6 through 10 took on the roles of historians at the esteemed National History Day contest, a global competition that engages students in historical research and analysis. Hosted by Singapore International School, the event saw participation from 27 international schools worldwide, fostering a vibrant exchange of historical narratives and perspectives. Our students embarked on a rigorous journey of discovery, utilizing both primary and secondary sources to build compelling historical arguments. Their hard work culminated in a variety of creative projects including exhibits, documentaries, websites, essays, and performances, each reflecting deep engagement with their chosen topics.
The competition was fierce as our students showcased their projects alongside peers from across the globe. The international division of National History Day held the awards ceremony via a Zoom session hosted by the Singapore American School last March 15. We are immensely proud of all our participants and wish to extend special congratulations to our winners:
-1st Place Group Documentary: “Beyond the Coup: South Korea’s Democratic Awakening” by Javi Dominguez and Jiho Yoon. Their outstanding work has earned them a spot at the grand finals in Maryland, USA, this coming June.
-3rd Place Group Performance: "Coco Chanel: Revolutionary of Women's Fashion" by Dain Lee (Diane), Vincent Tai, and LiYue Toh.
-Courageous Historians Award: Jihwan Yoo (Jayden) and Hyekang Jee (David) were recognized for their exceptional research skills.
Our gratitude goes out to Mr. Tanner and Dr. Korth, whose guidance and support were instrumental in our students' success. We look forward to the continued achievements of our budding historians and are excited for what the future holds as they further develop their research and analytical skills.
Introducing CAT4 Testing: Navigating New Assessments
This March, SSMFC embarked on a new journey in student assessment by implementing CAT4 testing for grades 3 to 10, a first for our community. The CAT4, or Cognitive Abilities Test, is designed to assess a variety of cognitive skills including verbal, non-verbal, quantitative, and spatial reasoning. In the future, this exam will just be given upon admission. We began using this test to better understanding individual capacities, areas in need of further development, and to give families ideas for potential future careers. Following the testing, a Parent university for both lower and upper school divisions was held and our faculty participated in a Professional Development day focused on a deep dive into the CAT4 results. The faculty session was instrumental in equipping our teachers with the tools to analyze data comprehensively and integrate findings into their teaching methods to enhance student outcomes.
National Bilingual/Multilingual Month
This April, we're celebrating National Bilingual/Multilingual Month! To honor this occasion, we're inviting students to learn and share a story from their home country. Encourage your child to ask family members—parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts—for a tale that holds significance in your cultural heritage. When they return to school, they'll have the chance to share their story with classmates and teachers. This activity promotes language development and cultural appreciation among our students, fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community.
Thank you for your support in celebrating our cultural diversity!
Neurodiversity Month
April marks the beginning of Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about autism spectrum disorders, but more importantly, promoting acceptance and understanding of neurodiversity throughout the world. Neurodiversity celebrates the idea that neurological differences are simply natural variations of the human experience rather than deficits to be fixed.
This month provides us with an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about the unique strengths and challenges each neurodiverse individual may face, and to celebrate the unique strengths and talents of all our students. By fostering an environment of inclusivity and support, we can ensure that all students feel valued and respected for who they are. Let's join together to embrace diversity and promote acceptance in our school and beyond.
